Confidence is something you often see grow gradually in hospitality.
Many people begin their journey with very little experience, unsure of themselves and unsure of what they are capable of. The role may start as something temporary or part-time, but over time something begins to change.
As individuals become more familiar with the day-to-day routines of the pub, they begin to feel more comfortable in their surroundings. Tasks that once felt unfamiliar start to become second nature. Interactions with guests become easier, and small responsibilities are handled with greater confidence.
It is often at this stage that potential begins to show.
In my experience, confidence rarely appears overnight. It develops through experience, encouragement and trust. When team members are given the opportunity to take on more responsibility, they often rise to the challenge in ways that surprise even themselves.
Sometimes it is a simple step, such as taking charge of a shift section or supporting a new team member. These moments may seem small, but they are significant in building belief and capability.
I have seen many young team members progress in this way, gradually stepping into leadership roles and taking on greater responsibility within the business. Watching that development take place is one of the most rewarding aspects of hospitality.
Support plays a crucial role in this process. When managers take the time to guide, encourage and provide clear expectations, confidence grows more naturally. People begin to feel that they are trusted and capable.
Over time, that confidence becomes visible not just in how individuals carry out their roles, but in how they support others.
In hospitality, strong leaders are often developed in this way — not through formal instruction alone, but through experience, encouragement and the opportunity to grow.
